The Loud Summer of 2026: A Chronicle
From Alipay to SAP Sapphire: a compact, dated chronicle of the agentic commerce announcements that changed the market in 2026. A reference piece for the full cluster.
A Reference Chronicle
The agentic commerce infrastructure that reached production scale in 2026 was built across a compressed period of announcements, protocol launches, and ecosystem expansions. This chronicle documents the key events in order. It is a reference for the cluster of analyses linked at the end, not a comprehensive market survey.
OpenAI shifted its commercial direction toward agentic commerce, with Walmart, Target, and a cohort of major retailers participating in the initial rollout of an agentic commerce protocol. [Q15] The announcement marked the point at which the largest AI infrastructure provider committed to agentic commerce as a product category rather than a research direction.
Amazon reworked its shopping assistant into a purchasing agent capable of executing transactions on behalf of users. [Q16] At Google I/O, Google announced further development of its Agentic Payment Protocol (AP2), the signed-mandate framework for human-not-present payments. [Q5] These two announcements in the same month signaled that the major commerce platforms were moving from conversational AI to transactional AI simultaneously.
Mastercard launched Agent Pay, introducing Verifiable Intent as the signed audit chain for agent-executed transactions, programmatic spending limits set by the issuer, and a dispute and chargeback mechanism built on the mandate record. [Q3] Agent Pay for Machines extended this to multi-rail settlement. [Q4] The launch established Mastercard's position as the first major payment network to publish a complete agentic payment protocol.
Visa Intelligent Commerce went live in Europe with more than 30 issuer partners, including lastminute.com, Frasers, Cleverbridge, and BrickDepot. [Q1] The Trusted Agent Protocol and Agent Directory moved from announced infrastructure to production infrastructure. Separately, Ant International completed a USD 1.2 billion financing round, in part to support the scaling of its AI-agent transaction processing capabilities. [Q17]
Alipay is processing approximately 120 million AI-agent transactions per week. [Q9] This is the only publicly available benchmark for agentic commerce at consumer scale. It operates in a single-operator context where identity, payment, and agent layer are controlled by one entity, which is not the European structural model, but it demonstrates what the infrastructure is capable of when integrated end to end.
SAP announced the AI Agent Hub at Sapphire 2026, providing granular permission management and a full audit log for AI agents operating inside enterprise procurement and workflow systems. [Q7] The Hub addresses the back-office end of the control layer: the point at which an agent-executed purchase must be reconciled, approved, and recorded within an enterprise's governance infrastructure.
What This Chronicle Shows
The six-month period from March to August 2026 saw every major payment network, two of the largest commerce platforms, the largest enterprise software vendor, and the largest digital wallet by transaction volume publish production-grade agentic commerce infrastructure simultaneously. This is not a coincidence of timing. It reflects a shared assessment across organizations with competitive interests that the infrastructure readiness threshold had been reached.
